Intermediate/Advanced Authentic Movement
Located at: 217G Woodstock Ave Rutland VT 05701
Join us for a 4 week series of Intermediate to Advanced Authentic Movement classes. This class is recommended for those that either have had somatic or movement based classes before or have practice Authentic Movement. While beginners are welcome, this class may challenge beginners more. If you are looking for a beginner and all levels class, please look at the Wednesday Evening Class Offering.
Authentic Movement is a Contemplative and Meditative Movement practice. The goal is to increase awareness of the body, unconscious material and improve the inner experience. Authentic Movement is a practice that was developed in the 1950's from Mary Whitehouse, one of the pioneers of Dance/Movement Therapy. This practice supports participants in building and accessing personal authentic self expression through body awareness and presence. It relies heavily on mindfulness and meditative practices and improves our attunement to our inner experiences.
Additional benefits that participants frequently report include:
Stress reduction/release of physical tension
Provides a safe space for expressing emotions that are difficult to verbalize
Increase self awareness and confidence by having guided space to explore our personal unconsciousness
Improves personal distress tolerance skills
Promotes nervous system regulation through embodied presence and mindful movement
Can induce states of calm, grounding and safety
Supports creative exploration and play without judgement or pressure
This series will be facilitated by Board-Certified Dance Movement Therapist, Suzanne Mueller. The flow of each class will follow a similar structure weekly, beginning with a meditation which will flow into a movement practice, and will end with either verbal and/or artistic group and self reflection time.
Wear comfortable clothing which supports a wide range of movement. Socks or bare feet are encouraged, and no specific dance footwear is required. It is recommended to arrive 5 minutes early to ensure an easy and peaceful transition into class.
Yoga mats and blocks will be provided as needed, but feel free to bring your personal mat. Art supplies and props will be provided. You are welcome to bring a personal journal for self reflection through the series.
