The vagus nerve in our bodies is within our spinal cord, traveling down our spine and around/under our pelvic regions. The vagus nerve transits messages between our bodies, and responds to emotional stimuli. When we become activated through anxiety, depression, stress or trauma responses, our vagus nerve may over “fire,” trying to communicate to our brains that it is concerned our body may be under physical threat. The vagus nerve also has the power however, to regulate mood, stress and the body’s ‘rest and digest’ system. This meditation is geared towards helping you hack into the calming power of the vagus nerve to support emotional and physical regulation and decrease stress responses.
